Website, web app or mobile app: which does your business need first?

When a business decides to “go digital”, the first question is often which of these to build. The honest answer depends on what you want customers — or your team — to do.

A website: to be found and trusted

A website explains who you are, what you offer and how to get in touch. Its job is to turn searches and referrals into enquiries. If people cannot easily find you or check you out today, start here.

A web app: to get work done

A web application is software that runs in the browser: booking systems, customer portals, order tracking, internal dashboards. It works on every device without an app store, and updates reach everyone instantly. Most businesses that need “an app” actually need this.

A mobile app: for repeat, on-the-go use

A native mobile app makes sense when customers use your service often, need push notifications, or rely on phone features such as the camera or location. It costs more to build and maintain, and people must choose to install it.

A sensible order

  1. Start with a fast, clear website so people can find and trust you.
  2. Add a web app for the process that costs you the most time.
  3. Build a mobile app once you know customers will use it regularly.
